How to Make an Inspiration/Vision Board– One of the ways I motivate myself to live an intentional life is by creating Inspiration/Vision Boards. They help me define what I want in my life, focus on my goals and dream about the future.
An inspiration or vision board is simply a collection of words, phrases and pictures that represent your overall life goals, or a visual representation of something you want to achieve.
For example, if you want to re-decorate a room you can make a design board with photos you collect from magazines, fabric scraps and paint chips. If you want to run a 5K or marathon, you can make a board with your training schedule, encouraging words and photos that represent you as a healthy and strong runner.
My favorite way to use a Vision or Inspiration Board is to discover more of what I like and who I am as a person, and to visualize the kind of life that I want to have in the future.
If you would like to make your own Inspiration Board, follow these steps to get started:
(See my Monthly Vision Boards HERE.)
Gather some magazines that you like. If you don’t have any magazines on hand, ask medical offices or libraries for their old magazines.
Cut out words, phrases and photos that you are attracted to. You don’t have to understand why you like them at this point, simply select the items that draw you in.
If you are working on your board over time, you can place the items you cut out into a folder. I place smaller pieces in a plastic sandwich bag so they don’t become misplaced.
Layout your elements. You can use poster board, a piece of cardboard or foam board, but I prefer foam board because it is sturdier.
When I have enough pieces, I layout everything on the board in a temporary arrangement. I like to play around with the positioning of everything until I like it and then I attach the individual pieces.
Attach each piece. You can use double sided tape, glue or a glue stick. I prefer a glue stick, but if you want your board to be more permanent you can use acid free scrapbooking tape.

The board pictured above is one that I made for our new home. I cut out pictures of rooms and paint colors that I liked, and added words and phrases about how I wanted our home to feel.
This board represents things that I want to cultivate more of in my life.
You can also make a visual journal in a notebook or bound journal.

Don’t worry about making your board perfect–just get started. Enjoy the process and if you decide to change something, you can remove what you have or start over! 🙂
