Why I Choose a Word of the Year
Every year around November or December I go through a simple but in-depth process (outlined in How to Choose an Inspired Word of the Year) to select a theme word for the upcoming twelve months. Over the years I’ve selected words like “more” and “abundance“, and I’ve been amazed at how I’ve seen those words play out in my life.
My 2022 Word of the Year
My Word/Phrase for 2022 was “Make Room for Adventure.”
I felt like God was asking me to simplify my life through:
- decluttering both my digital world and my physical world;
- eliminating distractions;
- changing habits and patterns that were no longer serving me well.
I had a sense that all of this was to prepare me for an exciting and eventful year — and it WAS!
- My middle daughter graduated from college.
- My youngest daughter moved out of our home to another state.
- My son became engaged to his girlfriend.
- My husband and I took an unexpected trip when his mother became ill.
And the biggest adventure of all:
I surprisingly started working full-time outside my home!
Thinking about my Word of the Year helped me to remember that God knew all of this would happen before it did, and He was with me all along the way.
My 2023 Word of the Year
My 2023 Inspired Word of the Year is a simple word, and a simple concept:
TINY.
It came to me while reading Atomic Habits (in “Books I Love”) and coming across a concept once again that I’m very familiar with. Tiny incremental repeated actions create breakthrough change, but you have to keep doing those actions even though you don’t see the change until later.
The word “tiny” reminds me to focus on the tiny, seemingly insignificant, actions that I can take today that will enable me to become the person I want to be down the road. (I’ll be posting soon about my tiny habits for this year so you can see a practical example of what I’m talking about.)
I was also reminded of the verse:
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin,
to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” — Zechariah 4:10 NLT
While this verse refers to a specific instance, I like to think that God is excited about my small beginnings as well.
Choose Your Word
Choosing a Word of the Year may seem like a small and insignificant step, but I’ve seen how inviting God into the process and focusing on my Word throughout the year makes a huge difference in my life.

I LOVE this Tamalita! Creating beauty is a wonderful goal.
Consistency…in my time spent with the Lord, in my daily good habits, in so many areas that I know what I need to do but just need to KEEP doing…consistently!
That is a great word and a fantastic focus for the New Year Becky!
My WOTY is Grace…accepting grace, giving more grace especially to myself who I seem to be hardest on.
That is SUCH a great word Stacey! We can all use more grace with ourselves.
