Learn how to start the New Year right in 5 simple, beautiful ways.
Hey Friend!
Want to know how to start the New Year right?
We’ve just come through one of our most challenging years, and I really want you to start this New Year full of joy and hope.
So today I’m sharing five simple, beautiful ways I set myself up for a great year and they’ll help you too!
How to Start the New Year Right
Review Your Year
I like to take this time of year to reflect on the previous twelve months and ask myself some questions like:
- What lessons did you learn?
- What beautiful moments can you celebrate?
- How do you want to live differently this year?
The Joyful Life Playbook & Planner has a fun Evaluate and Celebrate section to help you do this perfectly. You can also look back through your photos from the year to help you remember special moments and memories. You might want to make a photo album for the year.
Taking time to reflect then celebrate all the blessings and accomplishments of the previous year enables us to feel more grateful, which positions us to create an even brighter future for ourselves in the upcoming year.
Choose a Word of the Year
We all know that New Year’s Resolutions don’t work, and honestly, they’re more of a tool of torture than an inspiration because we often use them to beat ourselves up for all the negative stuff in our life.
But I’ve found a secret weapon that helps me focus on what I want to achieve in a more positive way:
Choosing an Inspired Word of the Year
If you want to learn my process for choosing your most brilliant Word of the Year and see how choosing an Inspired Word of the Year has transformed my life over the past 8 years, check out the How to Choose an Inspired Word Mini Course HERE.
Make a Vision Board
One of my very favorite ways to transition from the old year to the new is by creating a vision board for the upcoming year. I’ve found amazing results from visualizing what I want to happen including increasing my focus and actually accomplishing my goals.
If a big vision board is too intimidating, start with a monthly vision board. Read How to Make a Vision Board That Works HERE.
Set a Financial Goal
After all the holiday expenses, we can all use a checkup on our finances, so take time now to evaluate where you are and decide where you want to go.
Our family sets a savings goal for the year, but you can choose a goal of paying down your debt, funding an emergency fund, making a certain purchase or simply keeping track of your spending and sticking to a budget this year.

Declutter a Space
The beginning of the year is naturally a time when we want a fresh start in our homes, so take advantage of this and choose a space to declutter. You can focus on a small area in your home or make a quick tour with a box and fill it with items from several rooms.
The New Year affords us an opportunity to evaluate what worked and what didn’t in the past year, then make changes in our lives so the upcoming months can be brighter. These five tasks will enable you to start your New Year off right, and if you focus on one of these tasks each day, by the end of the week you’ll be set up for an orderly, beautiful start to your year!
As we enter the New Year, if you’d like some serious help with:
- deciding your priorities for this season
- choosing a focus and Inspired Word of the Year
