This post is brought to you by General Mills.
If you eat a gluten-free diet or you’re the mom of a child who needs to eat gluten-free then you know the struggle of finding affordable and tasty GF options. My daughter and I are so excited about the addition of the new Gluten Free Cheerios to the General Mills product line and a sweet offer if you purchase GF Cheerios at Walmart (details below).
UPDATE 10/4/15: General Mills has issued a recall of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios labeled “gluten free”. Read details of the recall here and read the response from the president of General Mills here.
We posted a review of Gluten Free Cheerios on this page given the information that I had available at the time. Given the new information we do not recommend that you purchase this product if you are eating a gluten free diet for medical reasons.
[UPDATE 9/10/15: It has come to my attention that some consumers with Celiac Disease have had reactions to GF Cheerios. I contacted General Mills directly regarding this issue and they sent this response:
We’re very sorry to hear that people are getting sick. We take these incidents very seriously and continue to ask people to reach out to our Consumer Services team at 1-800-248-7310 between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (Central time) with their specific box information. While we are confident our product is Gluten-Free, we know that there will always be people who suffer from allergies and other conditions that prevent them from eating gluten-free Cheerios, as they may have a previously unknown oat-intolerance. We recommend consumers who do feel sick talk to your doctor, especially if you have a known sensitivity to oat products.
I would personally recommend that if you or your child have Celiac or any severe reaction to barley or to non-gluten free oats you may not want to purchase this product.]
