Produce Store
(not pictured: bunch green onions, additional avocado, pint cherry tomatoes)
Grocery Saving Tip: Visit alternative stores (dollar store, health food store, produce stand, ethnic shops) to find cheaper prices on select items.
This week I had to run an errand in a different part of town so I stopped by my favorite produce store which has terrific deals. I spent $20.70.
Best Produce Deals:
honey dew melon $1.79
lemons 25 cents each
3 lb bag Fuji Apples $1.99
Haas avocado 50 cents each
green bell peppers 33 cents each
red bell peppers 50 cents each
cabbage 39 cents/lb
Publix Grocery Items
I also purchased several items from Publix one evening this week but I was too tired to photograph it for you. I spent $35.95 and purchased:
32 oz. organic yogurt $3.59
(2) 24 ounce Barilla Pasta Sauce $1.38 each
1 gallon milk $3.65
(4) 1 pound packages of butter $2.50 each (great sale price so I stocked up for the freezer)
(2) 8 ounce packages Apple Gate Organic Turkey Breast slices $4.99 each
(2) 16 ounce bottles Ken’s Ranch salad dressing $1.79 each
(2) packages Lender’s blueberry bagels $1.14 each
Winn Dixie Meat & Grocery Items
Grocery Saving Tip: Stock up when you find a good price on meat.
I was happy to find some great prices on meat this week at Winn Dixie so I spent most of our budget there. The whole chickens were $1.49/pound, the roast was $3.99/lb and the steak was $3.29/lb.
I also purchased a large bag of dried black beans. My total was $74.63.
When I arrived home to get a head start on dinners for the week:
I placed 2 beef roasts in the slow cooker with Italian salad dressing and Worcestershire sauce. We ate one roast for dinner that night. Half of the second roast was used for Beef and Veggie Soup for dinner the next night and the other half was sliced for sandwiches for lunch.
I placed 2 beef roasts in separate zipper freezer bags to freeze for later.
I placed the whole chickens into the refrigerator to cook two days later.
I sliced the sirloin steak into strips and poured my Fresh DIY Fajita Seasoning into the bag.
I carefully squeezed the air out of the bag, zipped it up and flattened the contents so it would freeze flat on a cookie sheet in my freezer. Preparing the package this way saves space.
Weekly Total: $131.28
March Monthly Total: $396.76
($125/week budget for six people so I am over budget again this week, but some of what I purchased will be used next week so hopefully I can end the month within my $500/month budget. )

Its so motivating to see how other people can keep their grocery bills low and on a budget! I wish we had lower cost grocery options in my area, but alas, ALDIS is as good as it gets (but it is still pretty awesome!). I try to cook most everything at home now, which really saves a lot of money! Thanks again for the awesome post!
Thanks for taking the time to comment Elise! I usually shop at Aldi but I was in a different part of town this week. I think the key is making a very specific meal plan even if you can’t find extremely low food prices in your area. And you’re right, cooking at home saves a TON!
