My son was asked to write a practice cover letter for one of his classes this semester. The following is what he turned in. Should I be worried?
Robert Mechanic II
Vans & Bros, Inc.
9001 Roadwork Blvd.
Kalamazoo, Michigan 12300
Dear Mr. Mechanic:
I am writing to let you know that not only am I interested in working for your company, but also to let you know why I believe I am qualified. I am looking for any position you have open, as I have a wide variety of skills.
I believe in this company and I am passionate about building vans. I believe in a world where big, windowless, attractively colored vans lurk around every corner. I am a hard worker and a good test driver, if the need arises.ย I am also skilled in van construction and freestyle rapping.
My past experience includes mowing lawns, doing dishes, taking out trash, burning anthills, riding in vans, riding on top of vans, riding behind vans, touching vans, standing within a 10 foot proximity of vans, looking at vans from a distance and selling ice cream.
I desire an interview and will contact you at least once every day until one can be arranged.
Sincerely,
N. Stokes
When I stopped laughing, I told him that maybe we need to work on a few things before he actually has to write a cover letter. ๐

Funny, but not one that I would actually turn in for a grade. For constructive criticism: (I’m not a teacher.)
He needs to state what mechanical skills he has. “Fixing small engines (like lawnmowers). “Changing oil in the van.” “Helping someone rebuild an engine.”
I wouldn’t hire based on funny. If I had a business to run, I want to know your qualifications as a mechanic and how you can help me keep my shop running. Funny~ sounds like a good people person, but I might want a mechanic not a receptionist.
After all the depressing news this week, I needed a giggle today. Love the letter!
My pleasure. Laughter is good for the soul. ๐
This just made my day! Thanks for sharing the joys of your family!
I think your son is awesome, and I would hire him on the spot after such a creative and intelligently funny letter!! No, don’t worry…just laugh and be happy!
I loved the honesty here! I mean Hello! , he knows all about vans even standing 10 feet from vans:) I think he will go far in life:)
Hilarious! Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us! ๐

There are always tons of people looking for jobs – I definitely think he would stand out. I love it!
That is too funny! You shouldn’t be worried because your son has a good sense of humor! And woohoo Kalamazoo! (I’m from Grand Rapids). ๐
I don’t know the teacher’s personality, but I think it’s fun for an assignment.
I’d hire him! He’s got imagination and a way of writing that clearly gets his intensions across.
He definitely has imagination–haha!
Lol, toooo funny. Maybe just take your address off so it’s not on line!
Good point, but it’s just a made up address for the imaginary company. ๐
That is AWESOME and if I had a van company I would certainly hire him. And ask him to rap while I ate ice cream.
Haha!
He has a very good sense of humor and imagination! That was too funny.
