10 Minutes A Day Decluttering: Kitchen Clutter
Are you joining us for the 10 Minutes A Day Decluttering Challenge? We are taking just ten minutes a day to remove clutter from one area of our homes.
Part of healthy living is creating comfortable and energizing spaces in our homes, rather than living with draining, overwhelming areas, and you can rid yourself of those cluttered areas by spending just a few minutes a day.
Take a look at my projects from last week:
10 Minute Project #1
I started with this corner of my kitchen where I had let the paper clutter and the utensil crock get out of control.
I spent 10 minutes removing utensils we no longer use, as well as throwing away and filing the papers from the side of the fridge.
10 Minute Project #2
Next I moved to the top of the fridge. The box is from an oil lamp that I had to use because of a 7 hour power outage. I threw it on top of the fridge to get it out of the way, thinking that I would put the lamp back in the box later. Well, that never happened.
I threw away the box, removed everything from the basket, fed the kids the remainders of the bags of chips and reorganized what was left. I also cleaned up and rearranged the items on the front of the fridge.
10 Minute Project #3
This cart and message center are the clutter magnets of the kitchen. This is the dumping ground for everything that comes through this space, and because the previous two weeks had been really busy, I had not taken the time to clean and organize it.
It actually took two 10 minute sessions to sort through everything, throw away the trash and put things where they belong.
After the clean up it looks much better! Even though the basket is still not super-organized, the clutter is contained which makes the space look cleaner.

I had made a list of things I wanted to get done this past weekend. 6 things, I managed to get 2 or 3 of those accomplished. I got tired of looking at the stuff under the bathroom vanity. I had some extra shoe storage boxes here so made up labels with label maker and made a box for Shaving supplies, personal hygience supplies, dental supplies, shower/bath supplies and First aid supplies. Our cleaning lady was here and left our home sparkling clean and smelling clean as a whistle. In 3 days, I will have it junked up again. Rec’d a genealogy information exchange letter on Saturday requesting any leads on certain families related to our family lines so I stopped my decluttered and copied an entire 3 ring notebook full and it is ready to be mailed tomorrow. I will take a nap now as I’ve been up since a few minutes after 5 am. but tonight I will make another attempt to declutter some flower gardening paper clutter that I’ve stashed in a storage box in the closet. There are other subject matters stored in storage boxes in same closet waiting to be sorted/weeded through and discarded I will set the time to 30 min. and see if I can make a dent in that box of stuff.
I need to set that time to 30 min. maybe 60 min. but yet with 60 min. I will just create more clutter I’m afraid.
Of course we could all spend more time decluttering. The issue is that we don’t. By breaking the task down into ridiculously small increments, we actually motivate ourselves to take action and that action over time produces change. Why don’t you try choosing one area this week and spending 10 minutes a day throwing away the trash, putting items where they belong and making a giveaway bag with items you no longer need or love? Let me know how it goes. 🙂
Our office corner of the bedroom was super messy. It started as 10 min chalenge of cleaning up one drawer, but then I got carried away and did 4 drawers and and 3 binders. It turned out into 1.5 hour project, but it all looks very nice and makes me happy! Not everybody in our household was happy, since I forgot to tell to my boyfried where is the new place for the chargers 🙂
Woohoo! Way to go Jelena!
My office/craft space/playroom was out of control. I attempted to catch up on scrapbooking and left all my supplies on a table. The evap cooler was blowing a lovely mess of dust right onto the pages and pictures I left lying out. Additionally, the other table and floor was scattered with various Legos. I felt encouraged with the 10-minute challenge idea and was reminded to just start small! My mess actually cleaned up pretty quickly and I feel so much better when I walk into the room. Thanks Kimberly!
Woohoo! I am so happy for you Christie. 🙂 Half the battle for me is getting started and the 10 minute idea seems to break that procrastination because I think to myself,”Hey, I can do anything for 10 minutes.” Haha!
