{UPDATE: While we have raised our grocery budget from $100 a week to $125 a week, some readers are surprised that I can feed our family on so little and still feed them nutritious food. I am re-posting this answer to a previous reader so you can get a glimpse into my thoughts on this issue.}
Q: I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I appreciate that you keep your food budget to $100 a week, but what about nutrition? I can’t feed my family organic vegetables and other healthy food for that amount.

If you find things like bountiful baskets food coop where you can purchase your fruit and veggies, you get a lot for a little. http://www.bountifulbaskets.org You can purchase a organic or conventional basket plus they have a lot of extras you can purchase. We also grow a lot of veggies, our own chickens, and Turkeys. We do not live on a farm yet! I know not everyone can have poultry in their backyard but it is another way to get quality, healthy meat. Also hunting, we do not buy any beef or pork. We eat elk, deer, moose, etc. We do spend about $250 to get all those animals (sometimes they are given to us by other Hunters) but that is for a whole year. There are many ways to eat healthy on that budget!
I agree that healthy food is a personal thing, I personally believe that the more fruits, veggies & whole grains & the less unnatural foods the better. My SIL, on the other hand is more concerned with sugar & fast intake of any kind so she uses a lot of artificial sweeteners & avoids anything high in fat even if it’s a veggie. We don’t tend to agree on specifics but we both care a lot about eating healthy.
