Did you know that October is Headlight Safety Month? (Who knew, right?)
With the change to Daylight Savings Time moms are far more likely to be driving at night, so now is the perfect time to take a look at your headlight lenses to see if they need an update. Hazy headlight lenses are a key contributor to reduced visibility on the road, in addition to the inclement weather than can crop up in the Fall.
The friendly folks at Pep Boys stores have a great solution if you have hazy headlight lenses (and a give away, so keep reading! :)):
The 3M™ Headlight Lens Restoration Kit – No Tools Required. This headlight restoration kit offers an easy and affordable way to clean your own headlights instead of paying for professional cleaning services.
This easy to use kit:
-restores the clarity of yellowed, hazed, or dull headlight lenses
-requires no special tools or skills, just a little “elbow grease”
-works on most plastic lenses including taillights, trailers, snowmobiles, emergency vehicle light bars and plastic motorcycle lights
Pep Boys recently sent me a bucket full of goodies to try including the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit.
My husband used the kit on the headlights of our “new-to-us” van, which as you can see from the photo, desperately needed some help.
The results are dramatic and only took us about 30 minutes from start to finish!
The really cool news?
Pep Boys is graciously giving away a bucket of 3M products including the Headlight Restoration Kit to one of my readers–woohoo!

Have to keep the lights on my mommy-mobile nice and bright for driving around the shorties!
My husbands car desperately needs his headlights restored. We’ve tried several products without success. It would be a great surprise for him!
How awesome! I’d love to try out the kit!
It is kind of Pepboys to offer such a nice giveaway. I like 3m products. My older 2005 car needs tlc like this. We’ve been working kinks like this out of it since we bought it a little over a year ago to get it and keep it running smoothly. While our headlights are not as hazy as your before picture, they are yellowed. Living in a small rural town, we often make trips to the neighboring town on unlit roads on these now dark evenings of fall. Being able to see and be seen with good headlights is important, especially since our main route is undergoing some major reconstruction with lane shifts. This package would really come in handy not only for such everyday needs, but we have upcoming holiday travel we want to be safe for as well.
We have a new to us van and could use a little headlight clean up.
We have two vehicles that I know could use cleaner headlights! It’s not something you really think about cleaning, but it could really make a difference in seeing (and being seen) better!
My teenage daughter drives an older model Durango. The headlights are dim and really need this treatment.
like the pep boys fb Julie A Scott Laws
mydaughter and son drive older cars – one of them is always needing something done to their headlights thanks
I would love the opportunity to see if it helped. We live in the country and the deer can be difficult to see. This just might help!
My amazing hubby works his butt off for our family – daddy to 2 under 2, full time job, singer in a band, we own a small business which he manages, and my personal assistant when I take on too much(which is almost daily) 🙂 He has an older truck and its on its last leg but we cant afford a new to us truck so he drive his “work truck” proudly. I had to drive it the other night and noticed how foggy his lights were. This would be a great surprise to give him to tell him how much I know he goes without for our young girls to have more.
I would like to win this, I’ve been wanting to try it out. I absolutely HATE driving at night!
My daughter who is putting herself through college drives a very old car. The headlights are in very poor shape and this product looks like it would really help her. She drives early in the morning (when it is dark) to go to one job and after dark at night when she is either leaving her other job or coming home from class.
Just found your blog. Thank you for so much good information.
I have been trying to find ways to clean my headlights! The dealership where I bought my car said they could fix the problem, but for a price. Would love to have this light restoration kit! I love the Pepboys! Thank you!
I love love love your blog Kimberlee! I am determined to get our finances on track and finding your blog has really helped. So thank you! I would love to have the restoration kit to brighten the dull headlights on our minivan. I have recently convinced my spendthrift husband that we don’t need a new vehicle and should keep our old minivan. Hopefully brightening up the headlights and a good wash will show him the mom mobile isn’t so bad after all. 🙂
I’m new to the frugal community…trying my hardest to cut where I can (food is definately our breaking point!)
I can hardly see at night cuz my lights never seem to be clean, even the same night following a car wash!
Love your blog!
Kristie
I “liked” the Pep Boys! We really need this because recently I was driving at night and felt like my headlights weren’t even on! I think this would really help.
We are a very low one income family with a hand me down older car thats always breaking down and my husband drives a ways to work and living in the country the roads are dark and our headlights are so dim that when it rains it looks like they arent even on at times they are so dirty…I worry for his safety and would love to have the headlights be bright for him!
Thanks you so much!
I think what you are doing for your family is great and I can relate totally!!
I travel late at night to get to classes and have a hard time seeing the road. Can’t get a new car because in debt. Love your blog by the way =)
Just a side note… Isn’t it also breast cancer awareness month??? So therefore… Check your headlights is quite appropriate… I rarely check my car’s though!!!
My 12 year old Volvo could use a treatment…they get foggy and need it asap.
I like Pep Boys on facebook! I could use this because our car is older and the headlights are terrible at night…this may help!
My daughter graduated from college in the spring of this year and has started her new job. The drive is one and one half hours in the morning and again in the evening. We live in a small rural community. Her 2002 Ford has that “seems to be impossible film to get rid off” on her headlights. The time change will make her driving while it is dark. I did not know there was something that could be used to remove this film. This kit would definitely make her drive safer.
I just paid an arm and a leg ($1200) to get my car fixed because we can’f afford a new. After not having it to drive for over two months I realized how dim my lights were. I checked them out when I got home and the plastic looks horrible. At first I thought they were just dirty but it looks like the plastic is worn. I had no idea there was a way to fix the problem without taking the car to somebody.
I have a 17 year old son who drives to a college course every day. He was accepted I.to the course despite a disease that will cause him to have eye surgeries throughout the rest of his life. He has had one surgery on each eye already. This disease inhibits his night driving to a degree. He worked for his father in order to purchase a car, but the headlights are very oxidized. It would be so nice to be able to know that he is seeing to the best of his ability while driving.
I have to do a lot of driving at night…Picking my son up from after school events and my husband from work. The street lights are far and few in between. Unfortunately, we are on a very tight budget with catching up on bills after my husband’s cancer surgery, that even the head light restoration kit is out of reach. I hate driving at night because my lights are not bright enough and I can’t see very far in front of me. We could really use the headlight cleaner. Thank you
I didn’t realize just how dirty our lights were until we moved from the city to the country last week! They are so cloudy that it is really hard to see the road. We have an old 97′ suburban that we tote our 7 children in and it could really use the headlight cleaner!
MY 98 Sub could really use this kit
We bought a new-to-us toyota sienna last year. I didn’t even notice the cloudy headlights, but several other people have! I have received lots of suggestions on how to shine them up, including using a certain kind of toothpaste! I’d love to try this kit, as your results were amazing. 🙂
I wonder if it’s the Sienna, cuz I have the same issue!
I just looked at the headlights this week and they are awful! As sad as this is to say, I had no idea you could clean them! I thought they had to be replaced! lol That’s great news! 😉 And of course a bucket full of 3M would be even better! 😉
This kit looks amazing…what a great giveaway! We are down to one income and this kit would be so helpful when running out of sponges, tape, etc.
Kimberlee,
My husband and I both work varying shifts, so we’re either leaving or coming in when it is quite dark out. Both of our headlights are becoming foggier and this car kit would be a great way to spruce up both vehicles!! Thanks for sharing so much with us all, you’ve been such an inspiration!!!
Rebecca E.
Both of our cars are older, and have dim headlights. This would help a lot!
I’m holding on to my 15-year old baby car for just as many years as she’ll let me and sometimes i can barely tell the headlights on at night. Please help me change that!
My Jeep looks awful, one headlight is all cloudy. It dosen’t matter how much you spit and polish it looks bad because of that one headlight. I really really need this! Maybe if the headlight was fixed I may be more motivated to keep it clean!
I have an old Blazer that I just love. It’s not the best car, it seems like it’s been not running more than it’s actually ran. BUT it’s paid for, clean and when it’s off and running I have a great time driving it. I’ve had some great family outings in it and some not so great 🙁 Anyways anything to keep this love of mine going and pretty would be helpful. I feel like anything cosmetic and small might make IT feel like I would feel buying a new pair of shoes 🙂 I know silly right 🙂
Not silly at all. 🙂
I read on pinterest that you can use non-gel toothpaste to clean your headlights. First wash your headlights with a sponge with a nylon scrubber on one side. Rinse headlight and put toothpaste on nylon side of sponge and scrub headlight. Rinse when finished and dry the headlight.
Thanks Evelyn!
I need the headlight kit because I do a lot of driving at night, and the areas I drive through sometimes are not well lit. This kit could help keep myself and other drivers safe, and other drivers are often other parents who need to get home safely to their families, just like me! 🙂
I thought this would make a great Christmas gift!
Will be picking this product up this weekend for my grandmother’s ‘new’ old car. Her headlights are so yellow, I worry that not much light is able to get thru, so I am sure this will help. Great post!
I’ve never heard of this, what a great idea! I’ve had my car for almost 10 years and have never used anything on the headlights, so I probably really need this 🙂
I “liked” Pep Boys. My 2003 Toyota is in desperately in need of the the headlight restoration. They are hazy and dim. Look similar to your van. Hope to win the gift package! Love your website!
My fiance was recently laid off so our budget it tight for extra things like this. It would make a wonderful xmas presesnt for him and his headlights need it!
My 2006 Hyundai Elantra’s headlights desperately need to be cleaned. They are so foggy and hazy that almost every single time I go to get an oil change the men at the station always try to up-sell me on purchasing the headlight cleaning service. I always politely decline because we are on such a tight budget, but it would be really nice to have cleaner/ clearer headlights. My husband works 40 minutes away from our home so he is on the road quite a bit. Winning this product would be awesome! =)
My 1999 grand am is in desperate need of having the head light lenses cleaned. They are very foggy and this would be an awesome product to use!
i didn’t know you could do that! wow.. I would love to try it on my cars.
I noticed the other day that my headlights were getting dim, and sure enough, they look a lot like the before picture! I’d be so thankful to win the prize package, dear hubby doesn’t always have the same priorities, and often makes car maintenance a low priority. This product looks like something I could use myself.
I need the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit because I live in Nebraska and all we have on our roads are deer and other animals. This would be great to help my visibility out at night.
I would like it so my husband could clean the cars. . .yeah, not going to pretend I’ll do any of the work on them.
We have an older cdn that is paid off, but poor thing looks like it has cataracts the headlights are so dim! It needs the restoration kit to feel young again!
My car is old (1995) and the headlights are not very bright. In order for my car to pass the state inspection, I have to use a product like this or it will not pass. My headlights look like your before picture. Thanks for the post and I love your blog!
My head lights can desperately use the help!!!
I have 2 vehicles that need this restoration kit. Love your blog.
My family of 6 needs bought a used van in early 2012, I’ve always commented on how dim the lights were then while checking my oil I noticed..they aren’t dim..they’re just filthy! I always think I’m going to pick up one of the restoration kits, but its one of those “slip my mind” kind of things! I love 3M stuff and would be incredibly excited and thankful to win this giveaway:)
