Did you really just buy 1 gallon of milk for the week? We go through at least 4 gallons per week & there are 4 in our home including a 10 & 14 year old.
We don’t drink milk (you can read more here: https://thepeacefulmom.com/2012/05/08/living-on-less-than-28000-a-year-drinking-problems-2/) and the children have cereal just once or twice a week, so we only need 1 gallon. 🙂
Thanks, I see now. I am new to your blog & shoyld probably have a better look around. My husband drink 3 of our 4 gallons a week all by himself. My daughter & I drink water all day long & my sons drink a bit of this & a bit of that.
Welcome! It’s no problem at all, I like answering questions. 🙂
So can I ask how you pay for your groceries? Do you take out your budgeted amount in cash so you don’t overspend? We’re a family of 6 & I’ve recently set our budget at $210 a week (groceries, diapers & cleaning supplies) & have not met that budget for the last 2 months…arrgh. I know that if I went in with cash instead of debit card, I would have to stick to it, but then I wouldn’t be feeding my family full meals or get everything I need for lunches. Do you find yourself going over budget more than not? Just curious how it’s working for you 🙂
Hi Kelly-If you would not be getting enough for lunches or getting full meals then your budget is too low. You need to make a list of EVERYTHING you need, estimate how much it will cost and then add a little bit for the first few weeks until you get a feel for how much money it will take each trip. My free ebook gives you some ideas for how to lower your weekly grocery spending: https://thepeacefulmom.com/2011/08/19/free-e-book-save-more-clip-less/.
In the past I just used my debit card, but in the past couple of months I have taken out cash and it has really helped me stick to the budget, but I make a very detailed menu plan and grocery list before I go to the store and that is the biggest way I stay on track. Hope that helps. 🙂
I have been using the food menu – and cooking a LOT from scratch… being vegan means no meat or dairy. I only spent $60 on groceries (ALDI and Walmart – plus a local farm stand)for the week. Got a bread machine for mother’s day – so, made bread… learning to MAKE tortillas at a major savings. My mission is to get in a nice rhythm so I am organized enough that I can prep meals and avoid prepackaged and processed foods. I find THAT is a major savings…
You are totally right–processed foods are the most expensive. I bought some this week because we have a busy schedule, but I usually try to make most things myself.
It’s cheaper to just make pizza… even ‘cheating’ by buying the pre-made dough in the deli section…. its usually like $0.99…. OR – you can just make a batch and freeze it for use later. That will cut costs WAY down. …
Absolutely, but I needed a quick dinner this week and this was cheaper than ordering one for delivery–LOL!
