Back to School Craft: Hip Homework Center
Creating a special place for your child to do school work is a great way to help him or her study better but making the space fun can motivate them to do the work as well. This Hip Homework Center is a fun project that you can do together and get organized for the school year.
I used bright solid colored paper for this project, but you can let your child choose paper that he or she likes.
If you’d like to make this Hip Homework Center follow these steps:
Bold Bookmark
Materials:
3 sheets of AstroBrights colored paper
scissors
glue or paste
light cardboard (recycled cereal boxes are perfect)
Instructions:
Cut three 11″x2.5″ strips of paper.
Cut a curved design about 1/4th of the way down the paper strip, at slightly varying heights on each strip.
Glue section “e” over section “d” about one inch from the top.
Glue section “f” over section “e” about 1 inch from the top of section “e”.
Flip sections “a”, “b”, and “c” upside down and glue them on the bottom of the bookmark as shown.
Trim the extra paper from the bottom of the bookmark. Glue the bookmark to a piece of thin cardboard or laminate it.
Poppin’ Pencil Cup:
Materials:
clean 14.5 ounce can
3 sheets of AstroBrights paper
pencil
ruler or other decorative edged item to draw pattern
scissors
glue or double sided tape
Instructions:
Measure a strip of paper to fit between the lip of the can and the bottom edge. Make sure that it is long enough to circle the can plus a half inch.
Draw a pattern on the long side of two sheets of colored paper and cut around the pattern. (You can draw free-hand or use the edge of a scrapbooking ruler or a folder with a scalloped edge.)
Glue the paper strips onto each other in layers. Tape the edge of the paper to the can. (Make sure to tape only a slight edge of the paper. You will need the second edge of the to overlap the tape and adhere to the first edge.)
Glue the second edge of the paper to the taped edge and clamp it with a binder clip or clothespin until the glue dries.
Funky Folder
Materials:
3 sheets of AstroBrights paper
pocket folder
pencil
ruler or other decorative edged item to draw pattern
scissors
glue or double sided tape
Instructions:
Draw two different, but complementary patterns on two sheets of colored paper. Cut out the designs (or use the reverse of the strips you cut out for the pencil cup).
Tape paper to folder in layers using double-sided tape (or glue if you prefer).
Now you have a fun, colorful place for you child to complete his homework!

Thank Kimberlee. I like your article and idea very much I will try to implement on it.
Hello! I have no students in my home, but my neighbor does. When I was browsing your site, I cam across these ideas for desk accessories styled for students and had a “lightbulb moment”. All three of her children are still in school. Her eldest is a boy and in his junior year of high school, so I make his accessories out of paper in his school colors and put the team logo on them.
The two girls are another matter. One is finishing middle school and the other is a freshman in high school. they share a room and they are very color minded. They like bright, happy colors, so I borrowed your idea for the desk accessories and then carried it to other items. Their planners have see-thru covers, so I color-keyed them to the colors that they girls use to differentiate their things from the other girl’s things.
All three of them love their accessories!
So from me and from my neighbor’s kids, a huge, “Thank You!”.
Dianne
That is such a great idea Dianne! Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know. 🙂
