I am feeding a family of 5, including two teenagers and a 12 yr. old who eats like one! My question is: do you allow your kids to snack? When I look at your grocery purchases for a week I find myself asking about snacks…my kids seem to be perpetually hungry and I want to allow some snacking, but that gets expensive! I buy almost no prepackaged foods, btw.
We keep a few snacks on hand, but I basically try to fill them up at meals. You can read about the snacks we eat here: https://thepeacefulmom.com/2012/03/06/qa-what-do-you-do-about-snacks/. Hope that helps. 🙂
Just out of curiosity, how do you account for the gas money to travel to five different stores?
All of the stores are within a 2 mile radius of my house, so I just drive to them in order of where they are located (4 on one road, 1 on another). Obviously, this strategy might not be cost effective if the stores are far apart where you live.
You could also visit stores that you drive by on the way home from work or while running other errands. I have a friend who keeps a cooler in the back of her car so that she can visit the grocery store while she is running other errands.
Kimberlee- I have a question. Do you make your menu then go shopping, or do you look at the sale ads then make your menu? You post your menu before your shopping totals so I didn’t know which order you go in. I’ve started eagerly looking forward to the Publix Thursday ads so I can try to plan a weekly menu around it. It doesn’t always work because some ads are much better than others. But, I am trying to control the food budget in this arena of rising prices. Thanks for what you do. God bless.
Hi Mandy! I always check the pantry, fridge and freezer and then the sales when I make my menu. I post the shopping later just because it takes more time to get the post together. 🙂
Awesome finds this week! Does your local produce market advertise sales, or do you just stop to check out what they have every week?
Thanks for the link up!
They do not advertise. It’s just a mom and pop store and I check every week to see what’s on sale. I wish that ad matching at Walmart would work in my area, but it rarely yields better savings than I can get by going to the different stores in my area.
I have tried the ad matching at Walmart, but my local Krogers doubles all coupons up to $1.00 and I have found that is cheaper than ad matching at Walmart.
We also have a local international market that has a clearance produce selection that is amazing! Their clearance produce are like the grocery stores every day produce, but it is hit and miss on what they have!
