I have been debating this,my ole” Bessie(1986 car) takes 25.00 round trip.So would have to add that in right off the top.Do you mean once a week?or monthly? If I did this once a month and then purchased produce (when gardens not in season) and milk locally. However,I would have to stick to sale items for the trip and would have to just repeat alot throughout the month on meals….Thank you for your help…..
I was thinking that making a monthly trip to the city might be worth it if you purchased the super sale items. You could keep a price book so you know what a good price is. Just a thought. I hope you can find something that works for you. 🙂
Does your $100 grocery budget only include food items? Or does that amount include shampoo, paper products, etc also?
Yes, only food items. In the past I was able to do food and non-food for $100, but now it’s just food.
Wow! This is amazing! I have 2 teenage boys and one 9yo boy and they eat us out of house and home! I honestly don’t think I could feed my whole family on $100/wk because of how much they eat plus the fact that my husband takes our leftovers for work the next day for his lunch. I plan my menus and shop sales but with 2 football players, one basketball player and a husband that doesn’t miss a day at the gym, they are non-stop eating machines. I’m new to your site and this gives me hope! Thank you!
Sounds like you’re lucky to spend less than $200 a week! LOL
I have been following your blog for a few months now… I am so inspired by you!!!!! I am impressed you can stick to this budget with teens, as my kids are all three in there twenties and on there own but know how they devour a months worth in a weeks time…..Do you make up your own menu or use one from an outside source, also what is a good amount to spend on groceries for a couple with grandkis over a few times a week and kids and there families here two times a month?????(how do yo plan for these special meals?)
Hi Deborah! I saw somewhere that $40 per person per week is average. I think the more people you have the easier it is to spend less per person. By purchasing what’s on sale, cooking from scratch and eating simple meals you could probably get by with $60-$70 a week for you and your husband and maybe just plan to spend extra when family is coming over for dinner. As far as the grandkids, if you choose healthy snacks like fresh fruit (whatever is in season), peanuts and raisins, pretzels, homemade granola you might be able to do all of their snacks for $10 or less per week. Those are just guesstimates. Hope that helps. 🙂
I just found this repy….Thank you for your time….WOW $40.00 each(we have some cutting back to do).I agree its cheaper the more people you have, I always tell my hubs that we are spending just as much to eat now as we did when the three kids were at home.I know groceries have gone up,however we do over indulge…So its time to cut back:) we are in a rural area with one high priced store. The city is 45 minutes away, its a constant battle if I want to spend the gas and time to go to city,or just bite the bullet and buy from our local (high priced store)…
I wonder if you could make one trip into the city to purchase whatever is on sale that week and then just buy things like milk and produce locally. Good luck!
I don’t plan our breakfasts, but we usually have a few staples for breakfast through the week, and I eat low-cal Special K red berries :). Maybe one day I’ll start planning fun stuff 🙂
Your menus always look great! I was so busy setting up my brand new blog on Monday that I never got around to posting my weekly menu this week. I did, however, post a recipe for homemade croutons, and today I posted some tips for baking with yeast 🙂
I love reading your menu blog! I have a family of 5, and through menu planning we have been able to bring our grocery bill down to about $100 week (this week it was $110). Our menu for next week consists of chicken tortillia casserole, baked potato bar, nachos, hotdogs, lasagna, and grilled chicken. I even go plan our breakfast and lunch (especially my 1st graders) and it makes mornings run much smoother. Thanks for all your advice!
Looks good! Another inexpensive thing for dinner is pasta. I love it and kids too. Just add in some veggies and italian dressing, you don’t need meat. I made twirl pasta, with black olives, 1/2 onion, 1 can of italian tomatoes, 1 can of small white beans, drizzle of olive oil or italian dressing, season to taste. Pasta goes a long way and its good as leftovers. Love your blog.
That sounds delicious. I make an Italian Chicken Pasta Salad (click to go to recipe) that we like a lot.
This is my type of menu!
Thanks Lindsey. 🙂
