Kimberlee,
I just wanted to let you know you have almost brought me to tears. I am married with one child and will be unemployed as of 4/18. I have been very stressed out about how we are going to make it. I have made the choice to stay home with our daughter due to recent medical issues. We have quite a alot of debt and my husband brings home approximately $1875 a month. I didn’t think we would be able to live on that but you have given me hope. I hope that your are being rewarded for your selflessness and generosity of spirit. Thank you
Vicki–I am so sorry that you are in that situation, but so happy that I could encourage you. 🙂
again,I didn’t take pics of my shopping,so can’t link. But, did shopping at Aldi -total for week was 79.18!!! (4 people,2 teens)
Not bad, but I had already gotten the Udi’s GF bread from Trader Joes 2 weeks ago,and put some in the freezer….. Kimberlee, I might have missed this but how do you calculate your toiletries, etc? Right now I keep my CVS buys in a separate category, not with ‘food’.
I keep non-food separate and try to spend around $30 a month or less by buying things on sale.
I do most of my shopping at Aldi and Walmart too. I’m always amazed at how much food I get for the money at Aldi. The quality at Aldi is very good too (sometimes you have to watch out on their produce though – some of it spoils quickly).
Also I buy the “deals” (what is one sale and I have a coupon for) at Publix. Last week I got a jar of Ragu spaghetti sauce for $0.09! I use the deals I from Publix to stockpile items I know I will use in the future.
Looks like you got some good deals! I like to make my own pancake syrup. It’s very easy, just equal parts white sugar, brown sugar and water and cook for about 5 minutes and then add 1 tsp vanilla. I started doing this a few yrs ago and we all really like it. (Not saying that you should do it, but if you wanted to it’s really easy and saves a little money too).
Thanks Diane!
I love your blog and I must say your weekly grocery totals are the best! We try to keep our budget at $50 for a family of 3 (myself, hubby, and our toddler). I do really well shopping between Aldi and Walmart (Kroger when we get their awesome quarterly coupons).
This might be an oxymoron, but one way we save and splurge at the same time, is purchasing one of the fresh ready made pizzas from Aldi. It’s usually our friday night “treat” dinner and only costs $5.95 for a large supreme. We are saving money by not going out to a restaurant or having a pizza delivered, yet we are splurging because it’s a fun family dinner!
I also usually whip up a quick pasta salad to accompany it (pasta, italian dressing, and some olives). It’s a filler so it keeps us from buying more than one pizza. And we have enough leftover for a lunch or dinner side dish for a couple of nights!
I like that Katreena–a money-saving splurge. 🙂
