After reading the comments on my Aldi post, I decided to go to Walmart and check actual prices in comparison. Here is the breakdown. (Warning: Your eyes may glaze over if you are not a nerd like me.)
Aldi price (Walmart price in parenthesis).
Note: I have adjusted prices for size differences. For example, Aldi 24 oz salsa is 1.69; Walmart 26 oz salsa is 1.98. If the Walmart brand were 24 oz it would cost 1.83, so I have listed that price.) If no Walmart brand was available, I listed the name brand that was available.

As you can see Walmart is lower or very close on some items, especially produce and frozen food items. Aldi beats Walmart prices hands down on milk and eggs, snack foods, plastic bags and bread.
If I purchased one of each of the above items at Aldi, my total would be $72.11 plus tax. Walmart would be $87.73- a difference of $15.62 which is significant enough to make the change.
For our family, however, I save more buying items on sale with coupons. I only buy meat on sale or markdown and rarely pay more than $3.00/lb for it. I recently purchased first cold press premium olive oil for $2.99 for 16 ounces. This beats the Aldi price by $1.00.
Nutrition and grocery shopping are intensely personal. Every family eats differently and shops differently. Of course, you should shop the way that works for your family. If you love Aldi, by all means, shop there. For our family I will continue to stock up on sales and use coupons and if I run out of something before the next sale, I will go to Walmart.
I am limited in grocery stores other than Wal Mart, I have Food lion and Krogers. Have you done any comparison at either of these stores. I shop as many sales as possible.
I have seen some fairly good deals at Food Lion and I shop at Kroger every week. I usually only buy the loss leaders (the lowest price items that are usually found on the front page of the ad.) I am pretty good at keeping prices in my head, but you can keep a price book or look at websites like couponmom.com who lists a percentage saved on each item. Hope this helps!
Thanks. Peaceful Mom is a bi-weekly read for me. I greatly appreciate your insights, transparency and willingness to share.
Oooh, this week Publix is offering 10.00 off a 50.00 AMex gift card. There is a 4.95 charge by AMex; however w/10.00 off, you can get 55.05 in groceries for 50.00. similar deal with BP gas card (no service fee with BP): 50.00 card for 40.00 w/coupon (both coupons found on ad circular).
Thanks for the heads up Deon!
WOW. Thanks for being a geek. The rest of us benefit!!!! My hubbie did a price book one time…it really helped. That was before all four children. HA.
There are a lot of things we did before having four kids, right? Ha Ha.
I next to never shop groceries at Walmart, it’s always the farthest for me to go to and the lure of other non-grocery items are tempting, so Walmart is not really an option for me ( I won’t say never LOL).
But man, awesome breakdown of the Walmart prices against Aldi. I like what you said ‘For our family I will continue to stock up on sales and use coupons’ but when we are running low on milk and eggs, snack foods, plastic bags and bread…I will do Aldi’s.
BTW I am consistently saving more than what I spend oop! Whoo hoo!! Thanks for all your hard work on putting out all this saving info!!!
